Georgia residence permit visa-free countries: travel still decided by your passport

Georgia residence permit visa-free countries: the list is empty. A Georgian residence permit lets you live in Georgia. It is not a travel document, and the countries you can enter are still decided by the passport in your pocket.

This is the question people ask most often before they apply, and the honest answer is the one almost nobody publishes.

Tell us what you actually need and we will tell you whether Georgia does it — before you pay anyone.

Georgia residence permit visa-free countries: why there are none

Visa-free access is granted by the country you are entering, on the basis of your nationality. A few states extend it to people holding residence status somewhere else, but they name the issuers, and Georgia is not among them.

Armenia, next door, is the clearest example. It waives its visa for holders of residence status from the United States, the EU and Schengen states, and the Gulf states (visa policy of Armenia). A Georgian permit does not qualify, even for the neighbour.

Schengen does not change, in either direction

Georgia is not in the European Union and not in the Schengen Area. A permit it issues carries no weight at a Schengen border.

The confusion comes from a real rule pointing the other way: a residence permit issued by a Schengen state lets you move inside Schengen. Georgia does not issue those.

Worth knowing if you follow the news: in 2026 the European Commission suspended visa-free travel for holders of Georgian diplomatic, service and official passports (EEAS). Ordinary Georgian biometric passports keep their short-stay access. Neither has anything to do with a residence permit held by a foreigner.

Turkey, the other common hope

Turkish entry is set by nationality. Georgian passport holders get 90 days visa-free; the rule is about the passport, not about who lives in Georgia (Turkish MFA). Holding a Georgian permit changes nothing at Turkish passport control.

What the permit does do at a border

One thing, and it is the thing that matters if you live here.

Citizens of around 95 countries can already stay in Georgia for a year without a visa, so for a first stay the permit adds nothing at the border. It starts to matter in year two. See visa-free stay in Georgia for who gets the year and who gets 90 days.

What Georgian residency is actually for

If you came looking for mobility, Georgia is the wrong country and it is better to know now. If you came for what it does well, the case is strong.

  • Tax. A Georgian tax resident pays nothing to Georgia on foreign income, and an individual entrepreneur with small business status pays 1% of turnover up to GEL 500,000. See Georgia tax residency.
  • A business you can actually run. Registration takes a day at the Public Service Hall.
  • A base, not a passport. Permanent residence after five years on the investment route, or ten years on the ordinary one. See permanent residency in Georgia.

Travel rights come with a passport, and that is a ten-year road with language and history examinations at the end of it. See Georgian citizenship.

What is not yet established. We have found no country that grants visa-free entry on the basis of a Georgian residence permit, but visa policies are set by each country separately and change without notice. We have not checked all of them. If your plan depends on entering one specific country, check that country's own consulate rather than relying on this page.

Common questions

Does a Georgia residence permit give visa-free travel to Schengen?
No. Georgia is not in the European Union or the Schengen Area, and a permit it issues carries no rights inside Schengen. Your Schengen access depends on your nationality, exactly as it did before.
How many countries can I enter with a Georgian residence permit?
None that you could not already enter. We have found no country that grants visa-free entry on the basis of a Georgian residence permit. Some countries do this for permits issued by the EU or the Gulf states; Georgia is not on those lists.
Does the permit at least let me back into Georgia?
Yes, and that is its real travel function. A valid residence permit lets you re-enter Georgia without relying on visa-free days, which matters once you have used up a visa-free year.
What about a Georgian passport?
That is a different document and a different question. Georgian citizens hold short-stay visa-free access to the Schengen Area with a biometric passport. Naturalisation takes ten years of residence plus language and history examinations.

Not sure which permit fits you?

Georgian law has several residence permit types, and each one has its own conditions and renewal rules. Send us your nationality and how you earn. We reply with the permit that fits, or we tell you if none of them does.
