Georgia former citizen residence permit

A Georgia former citizen residence permit is a distinct ground in the Aliens Law for people who once held Georgian citizenship and no longer do. It is not a favour and not a fast track to anything; it is simply a ground of its own, with its own evidence.

Who this is

People who gave up Georgian citizenship to naturalise somewhere that does not allow dual nationality, and their position after the fact. Also people who lost it through older provisions and have been treating themselves as ordinary foreigners ever since.

It is a larger group than it sounds, and most of them apply on some other ground without knowing this one exists.

Georgia former citizen residence permit: what you have to show

That you held Georgian citizenship, and how it ended. Archive extracts, an old passport, a decision on renunciation. Documents issued abroad need an apostille and a certified Georgian translation like everything else.

The paperwork is usually older and harder to find than on other routes, so start it early.

What it does not do

It does not restore citizenship, and it does not shorten the path back to it. Restoring citizenship is a separate procedure with its own conditions. The permit gives you the right to live here while you decide whether to pursue that.

Why it is worth checking

Because the alternatives cost more. Someone eligible on this ground may be paying for a business they do not need, or relying on a work permit tied to an employer, when a ground they already satisfy was available all along.
